Coping Mechanism
SI is often a coping mechanism used when one feels too much emotional pain and cannot find any other way to cope. It becomes addicting and is often hard to stop. While some people might assume that quitting would be as easy as finding an alternate coping method, it can be hard to switch over as Self Injuring can become a nearly unbreakable habit-- or even a need.
Resisting the Urge
When the urge to cut, burn, or punch strikes, how do you get past it safely? A few SI'ers and former SI'ers have some advice that might come in handy, so check it out:
What, in your experience, is the best coping method to use to fight off the urge to SI?:
"Distracting myself by hanging out with friends or family."-- Current Self Injurer.
"For me, writing has been my coping method. I keep a daily journal. Music and art has also helped me."-- Current Self Injurer.
"Friends."-- Self Injurer in the process of quitting.
"Remembering that horrible shot that I got when going into the hospital and the look on my family's faces."-- Former Self Injurer.
"Making sure you don't leave the living room; don't walk away from the tv, don't get off the phone; write out what it is that is making you want to SI; clean; go for a walk; talk about it; do whatever you need to do until you're too tired to do it."-- Current Self Injurer
"Red marker and ice."-- Self Injurer in the process of quitting.
